American Osteopathic Association - Las Vegas, NV

The theme for the American Osteopathic Association’s 113th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar is “What Happens in Vegas…Reshapes the Nation’s Health.” The event will convene fifteen osteopathic specialty societies along with other osteopathic groups for continuing medical education activities in Las Vegas at the Palazzo and the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

The annual AIDS/HIV seminar will look at trends and future therapies in the treatment of AIDS. Convention-wide seminars of broad interest will be held on depression, minority health, women’s health, patient compliance, atherothrombosis, metabolic risk, migraine, and ADHD.

Educational sessions will cover topics including injury prevention, childhood obesity, osteopathic manipulative treatment for obstetric patients, pain management, asthma, allergic skin diseases, neonatal infection, pediatric cardiology, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, emerging immunizations, post-partum depression, military psychiatry, HRT and cardiovascular disease, osteopathic manipulative therapy in arthritis, and prolotherapy.

A one-day pre-convention workshop, "Avoiding Disaster: Osteopathic Approach to the Flu Pandemic," will be hosted by the American Academy of Osteopathy and the American Osteopathic Association on Saturday, October 25 from noon to 6 p.m. The workshop will review the osteopathic manipulative techniques used to facilitate patient immunity as well as vaccines, antiviral medications and other preventive measures and treatments.

Social Events

The Annual Advocates for the American Osteopathic Association will host the “Fore You Golf Tournament” at the Desert Pines Golf Club the morning of Sunday, October 26. The four-person scramble tournament’s entry fee benefits the AAOA, and includes breakfast and lunch, transportation, greens fees, and a shared golf cart.

The American Osteopathic Foundation’s Honors Ceremony, a black-tie celebration of outstanding osteopathic achievements, will be held at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort on Sunday, October 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. to benefit the William G. Anderson, D.O., Scholarship for Minority Students.

CME Credit

This meeting is designated for up to 26 credits of Category 1-A CME credit. Registration is $495 for AOA members and $595 for nonmembers. An additional $50 is charged for on-site registration.

American College of Gastroenterology - Orlando, FL

October 3–8, 2008

ACG 2008, the American College of Gastroenterology’s Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course, will convene in Orlando at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center for sessions covering the latest research in gastrointestinal disorders and patient care.

Symposia topics include Treatment of Hepatitis C: What’s New?; ACG Guidelines: An Evidence Based Approach to IBS; Colon Cancer Screening: Getting to Zero Mortality; Update in Biologic Therapies for IBD; CT Colonography: Current Controversies; The Hepatology Consult; The Problematic Pancreas; Current Issues in GI Bleeding; Dysplasia Dilemmas in IBD; Obesity: What’s the Big Deal?; What’s New and Old in Barrett’s Esophagus?; and The Gut Microbiota: Friend and Foe.

The Annual Postgraduate Course will feature two days of lectures and learning luncheons, October 4 and 5, on topics including inflammatory bowel disease; functional GI disorders; esophageal issues; colorectal cancer screening; obesity; liver disease; pancreatobiliary disease; management of gastrointestinal bleeding; ERCP; and endoscopic techniques.

Full-day educational programs to be held on October 3 include the Practice Management Course and Monumental Changes in Endoscopic Practice and Technology: Tooling Up for Tomorrow. The Three-Day Board Review, October 3 through 5, consists of the Postgraduate Course in addition to the Pathology and Imaging in the Evaluation of GI Disease Course and the What’s New in GI Pharmacology Course. A Recertification Preparation and Update Course will be held the evening of October 3.

Social Event

The President’s Reception, a social gathering where colleagues can meet and enjoy refreshments, will be held on October 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

CME Credit

The Annual Scientific Meeting is designated for a maximum of 16.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. The Postgraduate Course is designated for 13.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

Registration before September 12 for the Postgraduate Course and Annual Meeting is $400 for ACG members and $700 for nonmembers. Registration after September 12 may only be done on site. Some sessions require additional fees.
